Wire Resistance: The resistance of a wire is measured in ohms per foot. The longer the wire, the higher the resistance. Higher resistance leads to voltage drop and heat buildup. Choose a wire with low resistance to minimize these issues.

Wire Type: For low voltage outdoor lighting, direct burial (UF) or submersible (UF-B) wire is recommended. These wires are designed to withstand direct contact with soil and moisture. They typically have a copper conductor with a protective insulation layer.

Wire Gauge: The wire gauge refers to the diameter of the wire. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire. For low voltage outdoor lighting, a wire gauge of 12 AWG (American Wire Gauge) or 14 AWG is typically sufficient. 12 AWG wire has a higher current-carrying capacity and lower resistance than 14 AWG wire.

General Guidelines: - For runs up to 50 feet, 14 AWG wire is suitable for low wattage lighting (up to 50W total). - For runs between 50 and 100 feet, 12 AWG wire is recommended for medium wattage lighting (50-150W total). - For runs over 100 feet, consult a qualified electrician to determine the appropriate wire size.
