How to Install Outdoor Landscape Lighting

Proper lighting can illuminate your outdoor space, make it safer to navigate, and transform it into a beautiful nighttime oasis. Whether you're just getting started with your landscape lighting or looking to upgrade your existing system, here's a beginner's guide to help you do it right.

1. Plan Your Design

Start by sketching out your property and marking the areas you want to illuminate. Consider the purpose of each light (pathway, tree spotlight, etc.), the wattage and beam spread, and the type of fixtures that will complement your landscape style.

2. Choose Your Fixtures

Landscape lighting fixtures come in various styles, materials, and finishes. Choose fixtures that are weather-resistant, durable, and harmonize with your outdoor decor. Low-voltage fixtures are recommended for safety, and LED lights are energy-efficient and long-lasting.

3. Determine Transformer Size

A transformer is required to convert household voltage to low voltage for your lighting system. The size of the transformer depends on the total wattage of your fixtures. Calculate the total wattage by adding up the wattage of each fixture and choosing a transformer that can handle at least 10% more.

4. Dig Trenches

Dig trenches for the low-voltage wires, approximately 4-6 inches deep and 6 inches wide. Place the transformer in a convenient spot and connect it to the power source. Run the wires from the transformer to each fixture location.

5. Install Wiring and Fixtures

Connect the wires to the fixtures using waterproof connectors. Test each fixture before burying the wires. Once everything is working correctly, cover the wires with soil and tamp it down.

6. Connect Transformer to Power

Connect the transformer to your power source (usually an outdoor outlet). Turn on the power and enjoy your newly illuminated landscape!
