How to Wire Light Sensor to Outdoor Light

Installing a light sensor to your outdoor light is a convenient way to automate your lighting system. By using a light sensor, your outdoor light will automatically turn on at dusk and turn off at dawn, saving you energy and time. Wiring a light sensor to an outdoor light is a relatively simple process that can be completed in a few steps. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Materials You'll Need:

- Light sensor - Outdoor light fixture - Wire nuts - Electrical tape - Screwdriver

1. Turn Off Power

Before you begin any electrical work, it is important to turn off the power to the circuit that you will be working on. This can be done by flipping the breaker or removing the fuse that corresponds to the circuit.

2. Remove the Light Fixture

Once the power is off, you can remove the outdoor light fixture from the wall or ceiling. To do this, simply unscrew the mounting screws and carefully pull the fixture away from the surface.

3. Connect the Light Sensor

Most light sensors have three wires: black, white, and green. The black wire is the hot wire, the white wire is the neutral wire, and the green wire is the ground wire. Connect the black wire from the light sensor to the black wire from the outdoor light fixture. Connect the white wire from the light sensor to the white wire from the outdoor light fixture. Connect the green wire from the light sensor to the green wire from the outdoor light fixture.

4. Secure the Wires

Once the wires are connected, secure them with wire nuts. Wire nuts are small plastic connectors that are used to hold wires together. Simply twist the wires together and then screw the wire nut onto the end of the wires.

5. Wrap with Electrical Tape

Once the wires are secured with wire nuts, wrap them with electrical tape. This will help to protect the wires from the elements and prevent them from coming loose.

6. Reinstall the Light Fixture

Once the wires are connected and secured, you can reinstall the outdoor light fixture. Simply mount the fixture back on the wall or ceiling and tighten the mounting screws.

7. Turn On the Power

Once the light fixture is reinstalled, you can turn on the power to the circuit. The light sensor will now automatically turn on the outdoor light at dusk and turn it off at dawn.
