How To Replace Outdoor Wall Mounted Light
Outdoor wall-mounted lights provide illumination for porches, patios, and other outdoor areas. Over time, these lights may need to be replaced due to damage or wear and tear. Replacing an outdoor wall-mounted light is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few steps.
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead)
- Replacement light fixture
- Electrical tape
- Wire nuts
Follow these steps to replace an outdoor wall-mounted light safely and efficiently:
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before you begin working on the light fixture, it is important to turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent any electrical shocks or accidents while you are working.
Step 2: Remove the Old Light Fixture
Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that are holding the old light fixture in place. Once the screws are removed, carefully pull the light fixture away from the wall. Be careful not to pull on the wires, as this could damage them.
Step 3: Disconnect the Wires
Once the light fixture is removed, you will need to disconnect the wires. Use a screwdriver to loosen the wire nuts that are connecting the wires from the light fixture to the wires from the wall. Once the wire nuts are loose, pull the wires apart.
Step 4: Connect the Wires to the New Light Fixture
Take the wires from the new light fixture and connect them to the wires from the wall. Make sure that the black wire is connected to the black wire, the white wire is connected to the white wire, and the green or bare copper wire is connected to the green or bare copper wire. Twist the wires together and secure them with wire nuts.
Step 5: Mount the New Light Fixture
Once the wires are connected, you can mount the new light fixture to the wall. Hold the light fixture in place and insert the screws into the holes. Tighten the screws until the light fixture is secure.
Step 6: Turn On the Power
Once the light fixture is mounted, you can turn on the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. The new light fixture should now be working.
Tips:
- If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace the light fixture for you.
- Make sure that the new light fixture is the same voltage as the old light fixture.
- If the wires are damaged, you will need to replace them before you can connect the new light fixture.
- Be careful not to overtighten the screws when you are mounting the light fixture.
