How to Replace an Outdoor Porch Light

Replacing an outdoor porch light is a fairly simple task that can be completed in a few steps. With the right tools and a little bit of know-how, you can have your new light up and running in no time.

Materials you'll need:

  • New outdoor porch light
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical gloves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Turn off the power. This is the most important step, as it will prevent you from getting shocked. Go to your electrical panel and turn off the breaker that controls the porch light. If you're not sure which breaker it is, turn off the main breaker.
  2. Remove the old light fixture. Once the power is off, you can remove the old light fixture. There will be two screws holding it in place. Remove the screws and carefully pull the light fixture down.
  3. Disconnect the wires. Once the light fixture is down, you'll need to disconnect the wires. There will be two wires, a black wire and a white wire. Use a pair of wire cutters to cut the wires, leaving about 6 inches of wire exposed.
  4. Connect the new light fixture. Now it's time to connect the new light fixture. Take the black wire from the new light fixture and connect it to the black wire from the house. Take the white wire from the new light fixture and connect it to the white wire from the house. Twist the wires together and wrap them with electrical tape.
  5. Mount the new light fixture. Once the wires are connected, you can mount the new light fixture. Line up the holes in the light fixture with the holes in the electrical box. Insert the screws and tighten them until the light fixture is secure.
  6. Turn on the power. Once the light fixture is mounted, you can turn on the power. Go to your electrical panel and turn on the breaker that controls the porch light. The new light should now be working.

Tips:

  • If you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's best to hire an electrician to replace your outdoor porch light.
  • Be sure to turn off the power before starting any work.
  • If you're not sure which wires to connect, refer to the instructions that came with the new light fixture.
  • Make sure the new light fixture is properly mounted before turning on the power.
