How To Replace Outdoor Ceiling Light Fixture

Replacing an outdoor ceiling light fixture is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. By following the steps below, you can safely and easily replace your old light fixture with a new one.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, you will need to gather the following materials:

  • New outdoor ceiling light fixture
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape
  • Ladder
  • Safety glasses

Safety First

Before you begin any electrical work, it is important to turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker. Once the power is turned off, put on your safety glasses and climb the ladder.

Remove the Old Light Fixture

Using the Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws that are holding the old light fixture in place. Once the screws are removed, carefully pull the light fixture down from the ceiling. Be careful not to drop the light fixture, as it could break.

Disconnect the Wires

Once the light fixture is removed, you will need to disconnect the wires. Using the wire strippers, remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires. Once the wires are stripped, twist the ends of the wires together and secure them with electrical tape.

Install the New Light Fixture

Take the new light fixture and connect the wires to the corresponding wires on the ceiling. Make sure that the black wire is connected to the black wire, the white wire is connected to the white wire, and the green or bare wire is connected to the ground wire. Once the wires are connected, tuck them into the electrical box and secure the light fixture to the ceiling with the screws.

Turn on the Power

Once the light fixture is installed, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. The new light fixture should now be working.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace your outdoor ceiling light fixture.
  • Be sure to turn off the power to the light fixture before you begin any work.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with electricity.
  • Use a ladder that is the appropriate height for the job.
  • Be careful not to drop the light fixture, as it could break.
  • If you have any questions, consult a qualified electrician.
