How to Remove Mold Mildew from Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions add comfort and style to patio furniture, but they can also become susceptible to mold and mildew, especially in humid climates. Fortunately, removing these unsightly and potentially harmful substances is relatively simple with the right techniques.

Step 1: Identify the Mold

Before starting the cleaning process, it's essential to determine if the substance on your cushions is indeed mold. Mold typically appears as fuzzy or slimy patches in various colors (black, green, white, or pink). Mildew, on the other hand, resembles a flat, powdery coating. If you're unsure, it's best to treat it as mold for safety.

Step 2: Vacuum or Brush Away Loose Mold

Before applying any cleaning solutions, use a vacuum cleaner to remove loose mold spores. If you don't have a vacuum cleaner, a soft-bristled brush can be used to gently dislodge the mold.

Step 3: Create a Cleaning Solution

There are various effective cleaning solutions you can use to remove mold from outdoor cushions. Here are three commonly recommended options:

  • Bleach Solution: Mix 1 cup of household bleach with 1 gallon of water. This solution is effective on white or light-colored fabrics. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling bleach.
  • Vinegar Solution: Create a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Vinegar's acidic properties are effective against mold and mildew. It's safe to use on most fabrics.
  • Baking Soda Paste: Make a thick paste by mixing baking soda with a small amount of water. Apply the paste directly to the moldy areas and allow it to sit for several hours or overnight.

Step 4: Apply the Cleaning Solution

Apply the chosen cleaning solution to the moldy areas using a sponge, soft cloth, or spray bottle. Avoid saturating the cushions excessively. Allow the solution to sit for 15-30 minutes to penetrate the mold.

Step 5: Agitate and Scrub (Optional)

For stubborn mold or mildew, you may need to agitate and scrub the affected areas gently using a soft-bristled brush. Do not scrub too hard, as this could damage the fabric.

Step 6: Rinse and Dry

Rinse the cushions thoroughly with clean water using a hose or washing machine (if the cushions are machine-washable). Air-dry the cushions in a well-ventilated area. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as this can cause fading.

Tips for Prevention

  • Store cushions in a dry place when not in use.
  • Regularly clean cushions to prevent mold buildup.
  • Apply a mold-resistant spray to cushions to protect them from future growth.
  • Remove cushions from furniture during rainy or humid weather.
