How To Refinish Outdoor Wicker Furniture

Over time, the inclement weather and constant exposure to the elements can take a toll on your outdoor wicker furniture. The sun's UV rays can fade the color, while rain and snow can cause the wicker to become brittle and weak. Harsh winds can also lead to cracking and peeling. If your wicker furniture is looking a little worse for wear, don't despair! With a little bit of time and effort, you can refinish it and restore it to its former glory.

### Materials You'll Need: - A mild detergent - A soft-bristled brush - A bucket or basin - A hose with a spray nozzle - A sanding sponge or fine-grit sandpaper - A tack cloth - A can of wicker refinishing spray paint - A clear polyurethane spray sealant (optional) ### Step 1: Clean the furniture.

The first step is to clean the furniture thoroughly. To do this, mix a mild detergent with water in a bucket or basin. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the solution and scrub the furniture gently, working in small sections. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with water from a hose with a spray nozzle. Allow the furniture to dry completely before proceeding.

### Step 2: Sand the furniture.

If the finish on your furniture is peeling or chipping, you'll need to sand it down before you can refinish it. Use a sanding sponge or fine-grit sandpaper to sand the furniture lightly, working in small sections. Be careful not to sand too deeply, as this can damage the wicker.

### Step 3: Wipe down the furniture.

Once you've sanded the furniture, use a tack cloth to wipe away any dust or sanding residue. This will help the refinishing spray paint adhere better.

### Step 4: Apply the refinishing spray paint.

Hold the can of wicker refinishing spray paint about 8-10 inches from the furniture and spray in a thin, even coat. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat. If you're using a light-colored paint, you may need to apply three or four coats to achieve the desired opacity.

### Step 5: Seal the furniture (optional).

Once the refinishing spray paint has dried completely, you can apply a clear polyurethane spray sealant to protect the finish from the elements. This is an optional step, but it will help to extend the life of your refinished furniture.

### Tips: - Test the refinishing spray paint on an inconspicuous area first to make sure you like the color and finish. - Apply the refinishing spray paint in a well-ventilated area. - Allow the refinished furniture to dry completely before using it. - Reapply the clear polyurethane spray sealant every year or two to protect the finish.
