How to Recover Outdoor Swing Cushions from Scratches

Outdoor swing cushions can quickly become scratched and worn due to exposure to the elements and use. However, it is possible to restore your cushions to their former glory with a little time, effort, and the right materials. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to recover outdoor swing cushions from scratches:

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

  • New fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Chalk or tracing paper
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Cord or cording

Step 2: Remove the Old Fabric

  • Start by removing the seat cushions from the swing frame.
  • Cut the old fabric around the edges of the cushion with scissors.
  • Be careful to cut close to the seams to avoid damaging the cushion itself.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the New Fabric

  • Measure the length, width, and height of the cushion.
  • Add 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowances.
  • Cut two pieces of fabric to these measurements.

Step 4: Place the Fabric on the Cushion

  • Center the fabric pieces on the cushion.
  • Pin the fabric in place around the edges.
  • Make sure the fabric is taut and wrinkle-free.

Step 5: Sew the Fabric Together

  • Sew around the edges of the fabric, 1 inch from the edge.
  • Leave a 6-inch opening on one side to insert the cord.
  • Double-stitch around the opening.

Step 6: Insert the Cord

  • Cut a piece of cord to the desired length.
  • Thread the cord through the opening in the fabric.
  • Tie the ends of the cord together to secure the cushion.

Step 7: Reattach the Cushions

  • Insert the cushions back into the swing frame.
  • Secure the cushions by tying the cord around the frame or using other fasteners.

Tips

  • Use a durable fabric for outdoor use, such as canvas or Sunbrella.
  • Make sure to waterproof the fabric before using it outdoors.
  • If you are not confident in your sewing skills, you can always hire a professional to recover your cushions.
