How to Plant Tall Outdoor Planters

Tall outdoor planters add height and drama to patios, decks, and balconies. They're perfect for creating privacy screens, defining spaces, or simply adding a touch of greenery to your outdoor living area.

Planting tall outdoor planters can be a bit tricky, but it's definitely doable with a little care and planning. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planting tall outdoor planters:

Choose the Right Plants

The first step in planting tall outdoor planters is to choose the right plants. Not all plants are suited to growing in tall planters. Look for plants that are relatively compact and have a strong root system. Some good options include:

  • Euonymus
  • Holly
  • Boxwood
  • Spirea
  • Japanese yew

Prepare the Planter

Before you plant your chosen plants, you need to prepare the planter. This involves drilling drainage holes in the bottom of the planter and filling it with a well-draining potting mix. You can also add a layer of gravel or broken pottery to the bottom of the planter to help with drainage.

Plant the Plants

When you're ready to plant your plants, dig a hole in the potting mix that is twice the width of the plant's root ball and just as deep. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with potting mix, tamping down gently to remove any air pockets. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.

Water and Fertilize

Tall outdoor planters need to be watered regularly, especially during hot weather. Water the plants deeply, until water flows out of the drainage holes. Fertilize the plants monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer.

Prune and Trim

To keep your tall outdoor planters looking their best, you need to prune and trim them regularly. Prune any dead or diseased branches, and trim back any branches that are growing too long or out of shape. You can also shape your plants into topiaries or other decorative forms.

Overwintering

If you live in a cold climate, you need to overwinter your tall outdoor planters. This involves moving the planters to a protected area, such as a garage or shed. You can also wrap the planters in burlap or plastic to protect them from the cold. Water the plants sparingly during the winter months, and do not fertilize them.

By following these tips, you can successfully plant and care for tall outdoor planters. These planters will add height, drama, and greenery to your outdoor living space for years to come.
