How To Paint Outdoor Plastic Rattan: Refresh Your Patio Furniture

Plastic rattan furniture is a popular choice for outdoor spaces due to its durability and low maintenance. However, over time, it may start to look dated or faded. A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into your plastic rattan furniture and make it look like new again.

1. Gather Your Supplies:

  • Plastic rattan furniture
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Painter's tape (optional)
  • Drop cloth or tarp
  • Exterior-grade latex paint in your desired color
  • Paint roller and tray
  • Paintbrush (for detailed areas)
  • Primer (optional, for bare plastic rattan)
  • Safety goggles and gloves

2. Prepare the Furniture:

Start by cleaning the furniture thoroughly with a mild detergent and water. Rinse and let it dry completely.

If the furniture has any peeling or flaking paint, use the 120-grit sandpaper to remove it. For a smoother surface, follow up with the 220-grit sandpaper.

(Optional) If you have bare plastic rattan furniture or if the surface is very smooth, apply a primer to help the paint adhere better.

3. Protect the Surrounding Area:

Use painter's tape to mask off any areas you don't want to paint, such as cushions or hardware.

Cover the ground with a drop cloth or tarp to protect it from paint spills.

4. Apply the Paint:

Stir the paint thoroughly before using it.

Use a paint roller to apply a smooth, even coat of paint to the furniture. Make sure to cover all surfaces, including the underside and the inside of any hollow sections.

For detailed areas or hard-to-reach spots, use a paintbrush to carefully apply the paint.

5. Let the Paint Dry:

Allow the paint to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Once the paint is dry, remove the painter's tape (if used) and let the furniture cure for a few days before using it.

6. Enjoy Your Refreshed Outdoor Furniture:

Your outdoor plastic rattan furniture is now refreshed and ready to enjoy. With a bit of care and maintenance, your newly painted furniture will continue to look its best for years to come.
