So whether you are a beginner or an experienced sewer, you can follow this guide to create beautiful and comfortable outdoor cushions.
Materials You Will Need:
- Outdoor fabric
- Foam or batting
- Zipper
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Chalk or a fabric marker
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Measure and Cut the FabricThe first step is to measure and cut the fabric for your cushions. To do this, you will need to measure the length and width of your furniture cushions. Once you have these measurements, add 2 inches to each side for seam allowance. For example, if your cushion is 18 inches square, you will need to cut a piece of fabric that is 20 inches square.
2. Cut the Foam or BattingOnce you have cut the fabric, you will need to cut the foam or batting to the same size. If you are using foam, you can use a sharp knife to cut it. If you are using batting, you can simply tear it to the desired size.
3. Sew the ZipperThe next step is to sew the zipper to one of the long edges of the fabric. To do this, place the zipper face down on the fabric, aligning the edges. Pin the zipper in place, then sew it using a zipper foot. Once the zipper is sewn, open it up and press the seam flat.
4. Pin the Fabric TogetherNow it is time to pin the fabric together. Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together, aligning the edges. Pin the fabric together around the entire perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning. 5. Sew the Fabric Together
Using a sewing machine, sew the fabric together around the perimeter, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Be sure to leave the opening for turning unsewn.
6. Turn the Cushion Right Side OutOnce the fabric is sewn together, turn the cushion right side out. To do this, reach into the opening and pull the fabric through until the right side is facing out. 7. Insert the Foam or Batting
Now it is time to insert the foam or batting into the cushion. To do this, simply stuff the foam or batting into the cushion until it is full. Be sure to distribute the foam or batting evenly so that the cushion is comfortable.
8. Sew the Opening ClosedOnce the foam or batting is inserted, it is time to sew the opening closed. To do this, fold the edges of the opening under by 1/2 inch and press. Then, sew the opening closed using a slip stitch.
