How to Make Outdoor Cushion Covers: A Comprehensive Guide

Upgrading your outdoor cushions with stylish and durable covers is a great way to refresh your patio decor while protecting your cushions from the elements. Whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a novice sewer, making outdoor cushion covers is a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a few simple steps.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Outdoor fabric (durable and water-resistant)
  • Cushions to cover
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Zipper or Velcro (optional)

Measuring and Cutting the Fabric:

Begin by measuring the length and width of your cushions. Add an additional 4-6 inches to each measurement for seam allowances and overlap. Cut two pieces of fabric to these dimensions.

Creating the Envelope Back (Optional):

If you want to add an envelope back to your cushion covers, measure and cut two additional pieces of fabric that are twice the height of your cushions plus 4 inches. Fold one piece of fabric in half lengthwise and stitch the raw edges together. Repeat for the other piece.

Sewing the Cushion Covers:

Place one of the main fabric pieces right side up. If using an envelope back, place it on top of the main fabric, with the raw edges aligned.

Place the other main fabric piece right side down on top of the envelope back (or directly on top of the first fabric piece if not using an envelope back). Pin the two layers together around the edges, leaving a 6-8 inch opening for turning.

Sew around the pinned edges, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave the opening unsewn.

Inserting the Cushions and Closing the Opening:

Turn the cushion cover right side out through the opening. Insert the cushion into the cover. Fold the raw edges of the opening under and stitch them closed by hand or machine.

Adding a Zipper or Velcro (Optional):

For easier access and removal of the cushions, you can add a zipper or Velcro closure. Sew the zipper or Velcro along the opening before inserting the cushions.

Tips for Success:

  • Choose a durable outdoor fabric that can withstand sun, rain, and mildew.
  • Use a heavy-duty needle for sewing through outdoor fabrics.
  • Double-stitch the seams for extra strength.
  • Pre-wash and dry the fabric before sewing to prevent shrinkage.
  • Iron the fabric before cutting and sewing for sharp, crisp edges.

With a little planning and effort, you can create custom outdoor cushion covers that enhance the aesthetics and longevity of your outdoor cushions. Enjoy the refreshed look of your outdoor space and the peace of mind knowing your cushions are protected from the elements.
