Building an Outdoor Wood Burning Fireplace: A Step-by-Step Guide

An outdoor wood burning fireplace is a perfect way to enjoy the warmth and ambiance of a fire while spending time outside. Whether you're hosting a party or simply relaxing in your backyard, an outdoor fireplace can provide hours of enjoyment. Building one is a great DIY project that can be completed in a few days with the right materials and tools.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make an outdoor wood burning fireplace:

Step 1: Gather Your Materials and Tools

  • Firebricks or refractory bricks
  • Concrete blocks
  • Mortar
  • Gravel or sand
  • Shovel
  • Trowel
  • Level
  • Masonry saw

Step 2: Choose a Location

Choose a location for your fireplace that is well-ventilated and away from any flammable objects. The area should also be level and have good drainage.

Step 3: Dig the Foundation

Dig a rectangular hole that is slightly larger than the size of your fireplace. The hole should be about 6 inches deep.

Step 4: Lay the Gravel or Sand

Fill the hole with a layer of gravel or sand to create a level surface. Tamp down the gravel or sand to compact it.

Step 5: Lay the Concrete Blocks

Start laying the concrete blocks around the perimeter of the hole. Use mortar to hold the blocks together. Make sure the blocks are level and plumb.

Step 6: Lay the Firebricks

Once the concrete blocks are in place, start laying the firebricks on the floor of the fireplace. Use mortar to hold the bricks together. Make sure the bricks are level and plumb.

Step 7: Build the Walls

Continue laying the firebricks to build the walls of the fireplace. Make sure the walls are straight and plumb. Leave an opening in the front of the fireplace for the firebox.

Step 8: Build the Chimney

Build the chimney by continuing to lay the firebricks on top of each other. The chimney should be at least 3 feet tall and should have a cap on top.

Step 9: Cure the Mortar

Once the fireplace is complete, allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before using it.

With a little planning and some elbow grease, you can build an outdoor wood burning fireplace that will be a cherished addition to your backyard for years to come.
