How to Build a Small, Backyard Fireplace

A backyard fireplace can provide ambience, warmth, and a way to cook over an open flame. Building one yourself is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend. Here are the steps involved:

Materials

  • Firebricks (approx. 30-50)
  • Firebrick mortar
  • Gravel
  • Pavers or flagstone (optional, for a base)
  • Steel reinforcement rods (optional)

Tools

  • Shovel
  • Trowel
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Circular saw (optional, if using pavers)

Instructions

1. Choose a Location

Select a level area in your backyard away from trees, shrubs, and other flammable materials. The location should also be well-ventilated to prevent smoke from accumulating.

2. Dig a Base

Excavate a hole approximately 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep. If desired, place a layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage.

3. Lay the Pavers (optional)

If using pavers or flagstone for a base, cut them to fit and lay them down in a single layer over the gravel.

4. Set the First Layer of Firebricks

Begin by placing a layer of firebricks around the perimeter of the base. Use a trowel to apply a thin layer of firebrick mortar to the bottom of each brick and press it into place. Ensure the bricks are level.

5. Install Steel Reinforcement (optional)

For added strength, you can insert steel reinforcement rods between the layers of firebricks. Cut the rods to length and bend them into a U-shape. Place them vertically between the bricks, ensuring they do not protrude above the surface.

6. Continue Laying Firebricks

Continue laying subsequent layers of firebricks, alternating the direction of the bricks to create a staggered pattern. Apply mortar to each brick before setting it in place. Use a level to ensure the layers are level and the walls are plumb.

7. Create the Opening

Leave an opening on one side of the fireplace for the firebox. The size of the opening will depend on your desired fire size.

8. Finish the Mortar

Once the fireplace is complete, use a trowel to smooth out the mortar joints and remove any excess. Allow the mortar to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

9. Build the Chimney (optional)

If desired, you can build a small chimney to vent smoke. Construct it using the same materials and techniques as the fireplace.

10. Season the Fireplace

Before using your new fireplace, it's important to season it. Build a small fire in the firebox and allow it to burn for a few hours. This will help cure the mortar and prevent cracking.

Tips

  • Use high-quality firebricks and mortar designed for outdoor use.
  • Always wear gloves and safety glasses when working with firebricks and mortar.
  • Allow the mortar to cure completely before using the fireplace.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
By following these steps, you can build a small, backyard fireplace that will provide years of enjoyment.
