How to Build an Outdoor Concrete Fireplace
Gather the necessary materials:
- Concrete mix
- Rebar
- Fire-resistant bricks
- Fireplace grate
- Gravel or sand for the base
- Wood for the formwork
- Nails or screws
- Safety gear (gloves, safety glasses, dust mask)
Prepare the site:
- Choose a level spot away from trees or other structures.
- Excavate a hole for the base that is twice the width of the fireplace and 6 inches deep.
- Fill the hole with gravel or sand and compact it.
Build the formwork:
- Cut the wood to the desired shape and size of the fireplace.
- Assemble the formwork and secure it with nails or screws.
- Make sure the formwork is level and square.
Place the rebar:
- Cut the rebar into lengths that are twice the height of the fireplace.
- Place the rebar vertically inside the formwork, spacing it evenly.
- Tie the rebar together with wire or zip ties.
Mix and pour the concrete:
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions to mix the concrete.
- Pour the concrete into the formwork, filling it to the top.
- Use a trowel to smooth the surface of the concrete.
Cure the concrete:
- Cover the concrete with plastic and let it cure for at least 7 days.
- During this time, keep the concrete moist by spraying it with water regularly.
Install the fireplace grate and fire-resistant bricks:
- Once the concrete has cured, remove the formwork.
- Place the fireplace grate on the bottom of the fireplace.
- Line the sides of the fireplace with fire-resistant bricks.
