How to Fill a Large Outdoor Planter
Large outdoor planters are a beautiful way to add color, texture, and interest to your patio, deck, or porch. They can also be used to create privacy screens, define spaces, or simply add a touch of greenery to your outdoor living area. Filling a large outdoor planter can seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite simple with the right materials and a little planning.
1. Choose the Right Container
The first step is to choose the right container for your plants. Large outdoor planters are available in a variety of materials, including plastic, resin, ceramic, and metal. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to choose one that is durable, weather-resistant, and fits your style.
Plastic and resin planters are lightweight and inexpensive, but they can be less durable than other materials. Ceramic and metal planters are more durable, but they are also heavier and more expensive. If you’re not sure which material to choose, consult with a garden expert at your local nursery.
2. Add Drainage Holes
Once you’ve chosen a container, the next step is to add drainage holes. This is essential for preventing the roots of your plants from rotting. If your planter doesn’t have drainage holes, you can drill them yourself using a power drill.
To drill drainage holes, simply place the planter on a stable surface and mark the locations of the holes with a pencil. Then, use a power drill to drill holes that are about 1/2 inch in diameter. Be sure to drill the holes at an angle so that water can easily drain out.
3. Add a Layer of Gravel
Once you’ve added drainage holes, the next step is to add a layer of gravel to the bottom of the planter. This will help to improve drainage and prevent the soil from becoming compacted.
To add a layer of gravel, simply pour a 2-inch layer of gravel into the bottom of the planter. You can use any type of gravel, but pea gravel is a good option because it is small and easy to work with.
4. Add Potting Mix
Once you’ve added a layer of gravel, the next step is to add potting mix to the planter. Potting mix is a specially formulated blend of soil, compost, and other materials that is designed to provide plants with the nutrients they need to thrive.
To add potting mix, simply fill the planter with potting mix to within 1 inch of the top. Be sure to tamp down the potting mix gently to remove any air pockets.
5. Plant Your Plants
Once you’ve added potting mix, the next step is to plant your plants. When selecting plants for your large outdoor planter, it’s important to choose plants that are compatible with each other and that are suited to the climate in your area.
To plant your plants, simply dig a hole in the potting mix that is large enough to accommodate the root ball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with potting mix. Be sure to tamp down the potting mix gently around the base of the plant.
6. Water Your Plants
Once you’ve planted your plants, the final step is to water them thoroughly. Be sure to water the plants until water begins to drain out of the drainage holes.
After you’ve watered your plants, it’s important to keep them well-watered, especially during the hot summer months. Water your plants deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
7. Fertilize Your Plants
In addition to watering, it’s also important to fertilize your plants regularly. Fertilizing will help to provide your plants with the nutrients they need to thrive.
To fertilize your plants, simply apply a balanced fertilizer according to the directions on the package. Be sure to fertilize your plants every few weeks during the growing season.
