How To Change An Outdoor Sconce

Safety First

Always remember safety when working with electricity. Turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that powers the sconce before beginning any work.

Tools and Materials

You will need the following tools and materials:

Screwdriver (Phillips and/or flathead)
Electrical tape
New outdoor sconce
Wire strippers
Electrical pliers

Step 1: Remove the Old Sconce

Locate the screws securing the sconce to the mounting bracket or junction box and remove them using the appropriate screwdriver. Carefully pull the sconce away from the mounting bracket or junction box. Disconnect the wires from the old sconce by unscrewing the wire nuts or using electrical pliers to remove the wire connectors. Mark each wire with a piece of electrical tape to indicate which wire is which.

Step 2: Prepare the New Sconce

Strip about half an inch of insulation from the ends of the wires on the new sconce using wire strippers. If the wires on the new sconce are not pre-connected, connect them to the appropriate wires on the mounting bracket or junction box using wire nuts or electrical connectors. Make sure to match the polarity of the wires (black to black, white to white, green to green or bare copper). Wrap the wire nuts or electrical connectors with electrical tape to insulate and secure the connections.

Step 3: Install the New Sconce

Place the new sconce over the mounting bracket or junction box and secure it with the screws. Tighten the screws until the sconce is snug against the mounting surface, but do not overtighten.
