How to Build an Outdoor Fireplace with Cinder Blocks

An outdoor fireplace is a great way to add ambiance and warmth to your backyard. It's also a great place to gather with friends and family on a cool evening. Building an outdoor fireplace is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend. With a little planning and effort, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor fireplace that will be enjoyed for years to come.

There are a few things to consider before you start building your outdoor fireplace. First, you need to decide on the size and location of the fireplace. The size of the fireplace will depend on the size of your backyard and the number of people you typically entertain. The location of the fireplace should be chosen carefully so that it is not too close to your house or other structures.

Once you have decided on the size and location of the fireplace, you need to gather the necessary materials. You will need:

  • Cinder blocks
  • Mortar
  • Firebrick
  • Gravel
  • Sand

Once you have gathered all of the materials, you can start building the fireplace. The first step is to dig a hole for the foundation. The hole should be about 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide. Once you have dug the hole, fill it with gravel and tamp it down.

The next step is to build the foundation for the fireplace. The foundation should be made of cinder blocks. Start by laying a row of cinder blocks around the perimeter of the hole. Once you have laid the first row, continue adding rows until the foundation is 12 inches high.

Once the foundation is complete, you can start building the firebox. The firebox is the part of the fireplace where the fire will burn. To build the firebox, you will need to use firebrick. Firebrick is a type of brick that is resistant to heat and fire. Start by laying a row of firebrick around the perimeter of the foundation. Once you have laid the first row, continue adding rows until the firebox is 18 inches high.

Once the firebox is complete, you can start building the chimney. The chimney is the part of the fireplace that allows the smoke to escape. To build the chimney, you will need to use cinder blocks. Start by laying a row of cinder blocks on top of the firebox. Once you have laid the first row, continue adding rows until the chimney is 48 inches high.

Once the chimney is complete, you can finish the fireplace by adding a cap to the top of the chimney. The cap will help to keep the rain and snow out of the fireplace.

Building an outdoor fireplace is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend. With a little planning and effort, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor fireplace that will be enjoyed for years to come.
