How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit with Cinder Blocks and Wood

Spending time outdoors around a cozy fire pit is a cherished pastime for many. Whether you're roasting marshmallows, telling stories, or simply enjoying the warmth and ambiance, an outdoor fire pit can elevate any gathering. Building your own fire pit with cinder blocks and wood is an achievable project that can enhance your outdoor space and provide countless hours of enjoyment.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Cinder blocks (large enough to form the desired size and shape of the fire pit)
  • Bricks (for lining the bottom of the fire pit)
  • Mortar mix
  • Gravel
  • Fire pit ring (optional)
  • Wood (logs or firewood)

Step 1: Choose a Safe Location

Select a flat and open area away from any structures, trees, or overhanging branches. Ensure that the ground is level and can support the weight of the fire pit.

Step 2: Create a Base

Dig a hole approximately 6 inches deep and 2 feet wide. Fill the hole with 4 inches of gravel to ensure proper drainage. Compact the gravel firmly.

Step 3: Lay the Bricks

Arrange a single layer of bricks in the bottom of the hole. Ensure that the bricks are level and spaced evenly apart. This will provide a solid base for the cinder blocks.

Step 4: Build the Cinder Block Walls

Start building the walls of the fire pit by laying a row of cinder blocks around the perimeter of the brick base. Use mortar mix to secure the blocks together. Continue stacking rows of cinder blocks until the desired height is reached. Leave an opening on one side for access to the fire.

Step 5: Create a Fire Grate (Optional)

If desired, you can install a fire pit ring on top of the cinder blocks. This will help contain the fire and protect the cinder blocks from excessive heat.

Step 6: Fill with Wood

Fill the fire pit with logs or firewood. Start with smaller pieces of wood and gradually add larger logs as the fire grows.

Tips for Success:

  • Allow the mortar mix to cure for at least 24 hours before using the fire pit.
  • Use hardwood for longer burn times and less smoke.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Extinguish the fire completely before leaving it.
  • Inspect the fire pit regularly for any damage or wear.

Building an outdoor fire pit with cinder blocks and wood is a straightforward project that can add warmth, ambiance, and enjoyment to your outdoor space. By following these steps and tips, you can create a safe and durable fire pit that will provide countless hours of relaxation and memorable gatherings.
