How to Build an Easy Outdoor Fire Pit
Gather your materials:
- Fire-resistant bricks or blocks
- Gravel or sand
- Fireplace grate
- Shovel and rake
- Level
- Tape measure or ruler
- Chalk or string
- Masonry adhesive (optional)
Choose a level and clear spot:
- Select a location away from trees, shrubs, and buildings.
- Mark a circle or square with a diameter of 3-4 feet using chalk or string.
- Dig out the area to a depth of 6-8 inches.
Create a base:
- Fill the excavated area with 2-3 inches of gravel or sand.
- Compact the base by tamping it down with the back of a shovel.
Lay the bricks:
- Start by placing the bricks around the perimeter of the circle or square in a single layer.
- Use a level to ensure the bricks are level and even.
- Stagger the joints between the bricks for added stability.
- Continue stacking the bricks in layers until the fire pit reaches the desired height, typically 2-3 layers.
- Use masonry adhesive between the bricks to secure them further (optional).
- Leave an opening on one side for access to the fireplace grate.
- Place the fireplace grate inside the fire pit, over the opening you left.
- The grate will support the firewood and allow for proper airflow.

Backfill the area around the fire pit with gravel or sand to a depth of at least 2 inches.
Decorate the area around the fire pit with stones, pavers, or other landscaping elements.
