How to Build an Outdoor Propane Fire Pit

Creating an outdoor propane fire pit is a fantastic way to enhance your backyard or patio and enjoy cozy evenings with friends and family. Here's a step-by-step guide to building your own propane fire pit:

Materials

  • Propane tank and hose
  • Fire pit basin (metal or concrete)
  • Lava rocks or fire glass
  • Pavers or concrete slabs
  • Gravel or sand
  • Propane burner
  • Hand tools (shovel, rake, level)

Step 1: Choose a Location

Select a location that is at least 10 feet away from any structures or flammable materials. Ensure the area is level and well-drained.

Step 2: Prepare the Base

Excavate an area 12-18 inches deep and 4-6 feet wide. Line the bottom with gravel or sand for drainage. Compact the base firmly.

Step 3: Install the Fire Pit Basin

Place the fire pit basin in the center of the excavated area. Use a level to ensure it is positioned evenly. Fill around the basin with pavers or concrete slabs, leaving 1-2 inches between the basin and the pavers.

Step 4: Connect the Propane Burner

Attach the propane burner to the propane tank using the supplied hose. Position the burner inside the fire pit basin and secure it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 5: Add Lava Rocks or Fire Glass

Fill the fire pit basin with lava rocks or fire glass to conceal the burner and provide a visually appealing appearance. Arrange the rocks or glass evenly.

Step 6: Safety Features

Install a flame arrestor on the propane tank to prevent backflow of gas. Consider a fire pit lid to extinguish flames and protect the fire pit when not in use.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Fire Pit

Connect the propane tank to the burner and light the flames. Adjust the flame height as desired. Gather around your newly built fire pit and enjoy the warmth and ambiance it provides.

Tips for Maintenance:

Regularly inspect the fire pit components for any damage or leaks. Clean the burner and lava rocks or fire glass periodically to maintain optimal performance. Always store the propane tank in a safe and well-ventilated area when not in use.
