Can I Spray Paint Outdoor Wood Furniture?

Spray painting outdoor wood furniture is a quick and easy way to update its look. It can also help to protect the furniture from the elements and extend its lifespan. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you start spraying.

1. Choose the right paint

Not all paints are created equal. When choosing a paint for outdoor wood furniture, you need to select one that is specifically designed for exterior use. These paints are more durable and resistant to fading and peeling than interior paints.

2. Prepare the furniture

Before you start spraying, you need to prepare the furniture. This involves cleaning it thoroughly with a mild detergent and water solution. You should also sand any rough edges or splinters. Once the furniture is clean and dry, you can apply a primer. Primer helps the paint to adhere to the wood and prevents it from peeling.

3. Spray the paint

When spraying the paint, hold the can 6-8 inches from the surface of the furniture. Use a sweeping motion and overlap each stroke by about 50%. Apply thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. If you apply the paint too thick, it will run and sag. If you apply it too thin, it will not provide adequate protection. Be sure to cover the surrounding area as well to avoid overspray.

4. Protect the finish

Once the paint is dry, you need to protect the finish. You can do this by applying a clear sealer. Sealer helps to protect the paint from the elements and makes it more durable. You should apply two or three coats of sealer, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

5. Enjoy your newly painted furniture

Once the sealer is dry, your furniture is ready to use. Enjoy your newly painted outdoor wood furniture!

Additional tips

Here are a few additional tips for spray painting outdoor wood furniture:

  • Use a respirator when spraying paint, as the fumes can be harmful.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area.
  • Allow the paint to dry completely before using the furniture.
  • Reapply the sealer every year or two to keep the finish looking its best.
